關於巴利《法句經》72 頌的不同詮釋

巴利《法句經》72 頌

Yāvadeva anatthāya,
ñattaṃ bālassa jāyati;
Hanti bālassa sukkaṃsaṃ, muddhamassa vipātayaṃ. (72)

A fool gains knowledge altogether for his harm.
It kills his fortune; it destroys his head.

帖主對巴利《法句經》72 頌的中譯是：
【愚者的名聲與知識僅會給他帶來傷害，
毀掉他的幸福，使他的頭破碎。】
這首偈頌的主詞是 'ñattaṃ bālassa'：「愚者的知識」，KR Morman 則翻譯作「A reputation for skill for a fool 愚人有(某種)技藝的名聲」。

從長老 Anandajoti Bhikkhu 的臉書貼文讀到的英譯是：
Learning arises for a fool
Only to his disadvantage,
It detroys the fool's good fortune,
It will destroy his very head.
這首英譯偈頌的中文是：
【學習帶給愚人
　只有對他不利，
　它毀掉這位愚人的好運，
　它將毀掉這位愚人的頭。】

這樣的翻譯隱約暗示「愚人不該學習」，因為學習只會帶給他不幸與傷害。
我想，此一偈頌應該沒有這一意思，這樣的翻譯文詞恐怕未恰當地表達偈頌的本意。

長老 Anandajoti Bhikkhu 的臉書還敘述了一則譬喻故事。
Learning only hurts a Fool. A young man learns the art of stone-throwing, but uses it to kill a Paccekabuddha; he is reborn in Avīci hell, and later as a ghost who is constantly having his head crushed by sixty-thousand sledgehammers.
【學習只會傷害愚者。 一個年輕人學會了丟石頭的技能，但卻用它殺死了一位獨覺； 他死後轉生到阿鼻地獄，後來又變成了一個經常被六萬把大錘砸碎頭的鬼。】
此一「譬喻故事」應該是出自巴利《法句經註》，如帖主以前所表達的立場，帖主一向反對用「譬喻故事」來詮釋偈頌的意涵，
我不認為用此一「譬喻故事」能改善讀者理解佛陀的教導。
當代學者認為【巴利《法句經註》應該不是覺音論師的論著或編輯成果】。

　相對來說，’The skill of a fool’ 的翻譯會比 ’Learning for a fool’ 來得合適。

　也許轉述的英文沒辦法讓長老 Anandajoti 完全理解我的意思，但是我的主張並未改變：

1. 巴利《法句經註》很有可能不是覺音論師的著作。

2. 這樣的譬喻故事，對解釋偈頌沒有幫助，這樣的「譬喻故事」對解說佛法不僅無益，還可能有害。
