關於初期佛教的八本好書 "Good Books on Early Buddhism"

Doug Smith 道格是　 Study Director of Secular Buddhism 「在家佛學研究部長」，他給對「原始佛教 Early Buddhism 初期佛教」有興趣的初學者推薦了八本書：
1. In the Buddha's Words 佛陀的話，這是：
'In the Buddha's Words', Bhikkhu Bodhi, 2005 July, Wisdom Publication.
長老菩提比丘送我一本他的簽名書，書中主要是依題材分類，去找到相關的經文。

2. The Foundations of Buddhism 佛教的基本教理，這是
　'The Foundations of Buddhism', Rupert Gethin, 1998 Sept., Oxford University Press.
對佛教基本教理的基本介紹，是非常理想的基本入門書。

3. Buddhist Thought: A Complete Introduction to the Indian Tradition 佛教思想：印度傳統佛教思想的完整簡介。
'Buddhist Thought: A Complete Introduction to the Indian Tradition', Paul Williams and Anthony Tribe, 2011 Nov., Routledge Publication Inc.
此書也包含了一些大乘佛教思想的介紹，所以不是全然的「初期佛教 Early Buddhism」。　

4. What the Buddha Taught 佛陀的啟示
'What the Buddha Taught', Walpola Rahula 錫蘭、羅睺羅尊者著，1959, 顧法嚴翻譯，1979, 慧炬出版社，中英文合訂版。

這本書是我推薦知青閱讀佛教思想的首選，不過，如果讀者不是假知青，而是嚴肅認真的知青，會發現其中的重大缺陷，也就是「讀不到註解」的內容。

較理想的英文版本是這一本：

What the Buddha Taught: Revised and Expanded Edition with Texts from Suttas and Dhammapada, Walpola Rahula, 1974, Grove Press, USA.

5. What the Buddha Thought 佛陀的思想
'What the Buddha Thought', Richard Gombrich, 2009, Oxford University Press.
Richard Gombrich 和 Rupert Gethin 是當代的兩大佛學教授，這兩本書都是不錯的佛學入門書。菩提比丘曾對 Gombrich 的佛教史解讀提出批評，正如道格所說，這不是該推薦給初學者的第一本書。

6. Theravāda Buddhism 上座部佛教
'Theravāda Buddhism: a social history from ancient Benares to modern Colombo', Richard Gombrich, 1988, Routledge and Kegan Paul.
這是一本經典名著，可以說是必修的讀本。

7. Buddhist Teaching in India
'Buddhist Teaching in India', Johannes Bronkhorst, 2009, Wisdom Puvlication.
西方的佛教文獻學家，除了 John Brough, KR Norman 之外，我最崇拜 Johannes Bronkhorst，主要是他能破除迷障與傳說，梳理出一條新道路來。

8. Satipaṭṭhāna, The Direct Path to Realization 念住，通往證悟的直接之道
這是我的老師無著比丘的博士論文改訂的書。
'Satipaṭṭhāna, The Direct Path to Realization', Bhikkhu Anālayo, 2003, Windhorse.
此書已由「香光尼眾僧團」翻譯，2013 初版，2017 再版。
無著比丘另有一書出版：
'Perspectives on Satipaṭṭhāna', 2013, Windhorse Publications, Birmingham, UK.
近期翻譯完成(譯者不是我)，將由法鼓出版社發行。
