Norman 譯巴利《法句經》--1

諾曼 K. R, Norman 是巴利聖典學會(Pali Text Society)會長(1981-1994)，他於1997 出版了「巴利《法句經》英譯」，書名為「The Word of the Doctrine 法語」：

在 1994，諾曼 Norman 與 Oskar von Hinüber 在巴利聖典學會出版了「巴利《法句經》英譯」，書名為「Dhammapada 法句」，並於 1995 訂正再版。

所以，此書的出版，一方面顯示諾曼 Norman 對「巴利《法句經》英譯」的重視；一方面也肯定有一些重要的研究結果，令巴利聖典學會與 Norman 都想在短期間內一再出版「巴利《法句經》英譯」的書。版主下定決心細讀此書(The Word of the Doctrine )，就請版友跟隨我的進度一起讀書吧，讀完此書，希望接著讀(The Group Discourses II )「巴利小部尼柯耶《經集》英譯」，

巴利《法句經》---第 1 偈

Manopubbaṅgamā dhammā,

Manoseṭṭhā Manomayā,

Manasā ce Paduṭṭhena,

Bhāsati vā karoti vā,

tato naṃ dukkhamanveti,

cakkaṃva vahato padaṃ.(PTS)

A. 《法句經》卷1〈9 雙要品〉：

「心為法本，心尊心使，

中心念惡，即言即行，

罪苦自追，車轢于轍。」

(CBETA, T04, no. 210, p. 562, a13-14)。

B. 《出曜經》〈32 心意品〉(13)

心為法本，心尊心使，

中心念惡，即言即行，

罪苦自追，車轢于轍。

C.  《法集要頌經》〈31 護心品〉(13)

心為諸法本，心尊是心使，

心若念惡行，即言即惡行，

罪苦自追隨，車轢終于轍。

D. Mind foreruns (all evil) conditions,

mind is chief, mind-made are they;

if one speaks or acts with wicked mind,

because of that, pain pursues him,

even as the wheel follows the hoof of the drought-ox.

諾曼 Norman 譯文：

Mental phenomena are preceded by mind,

have mind as their leader, are made by mind.

if one acts or speaks with an evil mind,

from that sorrows follows him,

as the wheel follows the foot of the ox.

諸法為心所引導，心為諸法的領導，

如果心懷惡意而言行，

眾苦將追隨著他，如同車輪跟隨著拉車的獸腳。(英文是「牛腳」)

1. 諾曼 Norman 指出一點大家都忽略了的差異，他說第二句「Manomayā 為心所造」，各版《法句經》都作「Manojavā 如心念般迅速」。

布臘夫 John Brough 指出(243頁)，「Manomayā 為心所造，則幾乎是『唯識』的講法」。

雖然如此，諾曼 Norman 仍然翻譯為「are made by mind 為心所造」。

2. Norman 認為 vahato，是vahatu 的單數「間接受格 genitive 予格」，vahatu 就是「牛」，這是巴英字典(PED, Pali-English Dictionary)所沒收的字義。

這讓我想起諾曼 Norman 說過的一個故事，Norman 的大學同事和他討論一個巴利字的意思，他說巴英字典(PED)錯了，這個字的確實字義應該是「某某某」，這位教授回答說：「不可能， 巴英字典(PED)怎會錯？一定是你的理解有錯！」諾曼 Norman 在書上說，當時他正在修訂巴英字典(PED)。
