佛教經、律中的「佛傳段落」

奧登堡（Hermann Oldenberg）認為經、律中的佛傳資料還是可信的，只不過要區分時間的先後、歷史事實與後世的增補。
雷諾茲（Frank E. Reynolds）指出 ：在當下的佛傳研究中，最要緊的問題或許是區分不同的文本發展層次、探討各種佛傳片段的結構以及這些文本在廣闊的傳統中所扮演的角色。

每一段佛傳的因緣故事應被視為一個獨立自存、逐漸擴充的佛傳單元，在不同的歷史背景、地域文化下發展出不同的層次，且表現在圖像上。
