西元1898年，一位姓名為 William Claxton Peppè 的英國人，在他印度靠近尼泊爾邊界的 Piprahwa 村家園莊裡蓄意挖掘，發現了一座磚造塔(Stūpa)，裡面有一個刻有婆羅米字(Brāhmī)銘文的有蓋陶罐，今日已將此銘文解讀出來：「Sukitibhatinaṃ sabhagiṇikanaṃ saputadalanaṃ iyaṃ salilanidhane Budhasa Bhagavate (saki)yanaṃ」。(舍利罐上共有35個字母，也就是35個音節。)
呂德斯 Lüders 解釋作：「此容器(內含)釋迦族(Śākyas)佛陀(Buddha)世尊(bhagavat)的舍利，為須詰提(Sukīrti)兄弟和他們的姊妹、兒子與妻子(所奉)。 This receptacle of the relics of Budha, the Holy One (bhagavat), of the Sakiyas(Śākyas), (is the gift) of the brothers of Sukīrti, jointly with their sisters, with their sons and wives.」
Harry Falk 福克解釋為：「This enshrinement (nidhāna) of the corporal remnants (śarīra) of the Buddha [1: of the Śākyas], the Lord, (is to the credit) of the [2: Śākya] brothers of the ‘highly famous’, together with their sisters, with their sons and wives. 此為[1：釋迦族] 佛陀世尊之舍利 (śarīra) 的安放處 (nidhāna) ，(供奉者為)「有美譽的」[2：釋迦族] 兄弟，及其姊妹、兒子和妻子。」
在1972年在原址的底部又挖出兩個安放舍利的陶罐。
